CEO Spotlight: From Hospitals to Hotels, How Pinnacle Hotel's CEO Barry Lall Went from Doctor to Hotelier

Many people know that Dr. Barry Lall is the founder of Pinnacle hotels, but not many are aware of his humble beginnings or success in medicine and business. His story starts with a desire to help others. “I was always interested in health care,” said Dr. Lall while discussing his early years during an interview on CEOWorld TV’s recent episode about CEOs who have gone from one career path to another, “so I became a physician.”

After practicing for more than 20 years as an emergency room doctor at hospitals, including the University of California San Francisco Medical Center and Stanford University Hospital, Dr. Lall decided to shift his focus from medicine and into the hospitality industry that he had been involved in since 1989 when Pinnacle Hotels was founded.

He would become the CEO of this company during a transition for both business and technology while also maintaining his medical practice on weekends – but it’s not as if he didn’t have enough to do already. His work in health care took him around the world and allowed him to help people suffering from cancer, AIDs, and other life-threatening diseases.

Dr. Lall is now focused on Pinnacle Hotels Group, which has 24 luxury hotels across North America with another 11 properties under development or planned for opening soon. The company currently operates some of the most famous hotel brands, including Montage Resorts & Hotels (Beverly Hills), Ritz Carlton (Half Moon Bay), and Four Seasons Hotel San Francisco, where we set up our interview at their private dining room just off Union Square – a place that Dr. Barry Lall knows very well having visited many times throughout his career as both a medical professional and business executive while traveling for work.

Dr. Barry Lall has served as President & CEO for Pinnacle Hotel Group (PNG) since January 2007 after joining PHG in October 2006 as Vice President/General Manager of The Westin Atlanta Perimeter North hotel property under development at the time. Since December 2014, he has also served as Chief Executive Officer of PHG’s parent company, Westin Hotels & Resorts.

After completing his post-graduate medical training in South Africa, Dr. Lall joined the hospitality industry and later moved to Canada for additional specialized training following graduation from Medical School at Stellenbosch University (South Africa). He received his MBA degree from Simon Fraser University in Vancouver. He graduated with honors up front among all students—a feat that earned him recognition by the Dean who designated Dr. Lall “The Golden Boy” during convocations ceremonies, citing this notable achievement each year until completion of business school.
